Steven Gerrard is facing the embarrassment of missing out on signing Connor Goldson from Brighton.

After Martin Skrtel politely declined an 80% wage cut attention turned to the Amex Stadium where Goldson played in three EPL matches last season. Brighton lost eight goals in thise games.

According to a report in The Express Sevco face competition from a couple of Championship clubs to sign the former Shrewsbury starlet.

Sevco have only added Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor to last season’s failures with none of Gerrard’s high profile targets such as Fernando Torres and Jermaine Defoe showing the slightest interest in moving to Ibrox.

With Brighton looking for £3m for Goldson he seems certain to be outwith Sevco’s price range with the only ‘won’t be held to ransom’ excuse expected to be trotted out.

Gerrard starts work on Friday with no sign of Dave King’s promised £6m share issue to fund the transfer war-chest.
