Joey Barton believes things would have been better for him at Sevco if he had been manager.

The former Strangeways Prison inmate spent a brief time at Ibrox before becoming one of the first victims of Brendan Rodgers’ revolution at Celtic Park.

Pip Senderos, Mark Warburton, Nico Kranjcar, Pedro Caixinha, Graeme Murty and Bruno Alves have also had their reputations ruined as Celtic dominated the Glasgow derby.

After arriving at Ibrox Barton was quick to mouth off his contempt for Scott Brown and Brendan Rodgers but after sharing a pitch with the champions his career at Sevco was dead and buried.

Barton picked a fight with Warburton then arranged a pay-off on the remaining 21 months of his deal before retreating south of the border to the Burnley comfort zone.

Maybe it was the right thing to happen to me at the time,” the new Fleetwood manager explained to the Evening Times. “I went from a phenomenal environment at Burnley with Sean Dyche who would do things at an exceptional standard to an environment that wasn’t at the same level and it was difficult for me.

I had solutions but I didn’t have enough power. I wasn’t the manager. Had I been the manager I would have done things differently and I expect Stevie Gerrard to do those things and be successful.

But I was a player and when it comes to a head and its either the player or the manager then usually the player goes and in that case that happened.”

Barton left Sevco with a one match suspension after being caught betting on football matches.

At Burnley he was given a 13 match suspension by the FA for betting on football matches.
