Keith Jackson can’t believe that Murdoch MacLennan didn’t turn to Google to find out the shareholders in Irish media group INM.

The Daily Record kicked off a deflection exercise last week with the revelation that the non-executive director of the SPFL held a similar post in a firm that Dermot Desmond has a shareholding in.

Google is indeed your friend as various internet bampots discovered in November 2010 when they were told that a billionaire from Motherwell was poised to take charge of Rangers (IL) and launch a new chapter of glory.

Within hours it was discovered that Whyte barely had a pot. Renting a castle in the highlands or holidaying in Monaco wasn’t a sign of having off the radar wealth for a man with a couple of dodgy business failures to his name.

For over a year the Record persisted to it’s army of readers with the notion that Mr Whyte was rolling in cash.

Now however Google can be trusted to undermine man who in 1982 became Production Director at the Daily Record, a decade later he became Group Operations Director for the entire group of Mirror newspapers.

Continuing their dangerous bid to discredit Desmond, today the Record claims:

It is unimaginable a man of MacLennan’s experience agreed to take on this role without carrying out his own due diligence on the structure of the company and its shareholding.

It would have taken him 30 seconds on Google to discover Desmond – as the company’s second largest shareholder – also has the right to appoint his own nominee to the INM board. That’s all that would have been required for MacLennan to raise the issue internally with Doncaster. If for no other reason than to keep himself right.”

A 30 second check with Google in 2010 would have saved Ibrox fans a lot of grief after their favourite newspaper introduced them to Motherwell’s first ever billionaire.
