Brendan Rodgers refused to be drawn on speculation that Celtic are close to signing Daniel Arzani on loan from Manchester City.

The 19-year-old appeared as a substitute in all three of Australia’s World Cup matches and is joining City from their Australian feeder club Melbourne City.

With no prospect of getting close to Pep Guardiola’s first team a loan deal is required with Celtic and PSV Eindhoven the most likely destinations.

Celtic have taken Jason Denayer and John Guidetti from City in the recent past with the relationship between the two clubs confirmed by Patrick Roberts spending two and a half seasons in Glasgow.

A two year loan has been suggested for Arzani but after his side’s 3-1 win over Rosenborg Brendan Rodgers wasn’t prepared to add to speculation that the 19-year-old was close to signing.

I can’t tell you anything about him or anyone else,” the hoops boss told The Sun.

All I know is that he is a young Australian, a very talented player and went to the World Cup where he looked very, very good.

The club are working hard behind the scenes to try and get some signings in. I think he’s been one that has been identified.”

Arzani qualified to play for Iran but has been an Australian internationalist since u-16 level. He scored his first full international goal in the World Cup warm up against Hungary one minute after coming on as a substitute.
