Five players joining Boyata out the exit door

|

After the most dramatic week of his tenure at Celtic Brendan Rodgers will be hoping for better fortune in the remaining 19 days of the transfer window.

The past week’s headlines have been dominated by the failure to sign players but there is also a clearing out operation needing addressed.

At the moment there is probably half a dozen players on the pay roll that wouldn’t be missed but moving player on is a difficult process.

Stuart Armstrong and Erik Sviatchenko were transferred in June but it’s unlikely that there will be any windfalls from the departure of the remaining players who are clearly surplus to requirements.

Clearly the current transfer window hasn’t gone to plan but there is still time to turn that around although the outcome of Tuesday’s match against AEK Athens will have a massive influence on how the remainder of the month looks.

At the end of his fifth transfer window the squad very much has the stamp of Rodgers across it with players like Kieran Tierney, Kris Ajer and Tom Rogic committed for the long run while Scott Brown still has enough mileage in the tank to see him through a few more laps.

SCOTT ALLAN

Was listed as a substitute for the matches against Alashkert but has now dropped out of contention.

Of all the clubs in the world to be linked with the midfielder Hibs are probably the least likely that Celtic will do business with leaving the midfielder as the fall guy in the John McGinn stand off.

With a year left on his contract another loan deal isn’t likely, a move to the continent would probably suit Allan, we’ll have to wait for his autobiography to find out what really went on during his Celtic ‘career’.

RYAN CHRISTIE

Is no closer to a first team place than when he went out on loan to Aberdeen.

His appearances on the bench are becoming less frequent with his development and international career under threat of stagnating.

Like Allan he was signed up in the summer of 2015 with none of those Deila signings going on to make the impact that had been anticipated.

CALVIN MILLER

The return of Emilio Izaguirre has closed the door on Miller’s faint hopes of a first team break through.

Rodgers converted him from a flying winger to full-back, a move that will help his future career.

With a year to run on his contract his departure will have to be handled diplomatically, there are plenty of examples out there of players who’s career kicked on after Celtic.

MARVIN COMPPER

Like Allan the story of his Celtic career will be eagerly anticipated.

Thinking back to December the level of expectation that greeted his signing was incredible, what has been delivered has been a distinct let down.

Where the blame lies is anyone’s guess- somewhere between Brendan Rodgers, the board, the player and the scouting department but there’s no doubt that the ship has sailed on his Celtic career.

CRISTIAN GAMBOA

Came in and did his job in both legs against Rosenborg, then returned to his place on the sidelines with Mikael Lustig back in favour.

With a year left on his contract and three appearances at the World Cup Finals in Russia Celtic should be able to land a decent fee for the defender bought in August 2016 from West Brom.

Having played in international tournaments in each of the last six seasons whichever club he joins will know exactly where his priorities are.
