Half a dozen departures before the end of August

All eyes at Celtic are on in-coming transfers but there remains a significant number of players that are clearly surplus to requirements.

Balancing quality with quantity is a difficult task with the recent performance at Tynecastle showing that beyond the trusted 12 or 14 there isn’t the depth of squad to cope with the more demanding domestic duties.

As he demonstrated with the bid from Fulham for Dedryck Boyata, Brendan Rodgers doesn’t want any reduction in numbers, putting the onus on the club to bring players in before any more join Erik Sviatchenko and Stuart Armstrong on the way out.

In his fifth transfer window the Celtic boss has almost completed a complete turnover of his squad with all of the first team squad, with the exception of Leigh Griffiths, having signed a contract since Rodgers arrived at the club.

The pre-season expectations from Austria have already died off for a number of players, with each passing match they see others on the park and on the bench as they drift further away from the action.

SCOTT ALLAN

Was left at home when Celtic travelled to Athens which gives an indication of how far out of the picture he is.

Any club in Scotland would welcome the 26-year-old into their midfield but no one can match the wages that he is on at Celtic.

Another move to a middling English Championship isn’t likely to suit his style, it looks like he’ll stay on at Celtic this season then move abroad next summer at the end of his contract.

RYAN CHRISTIE

Occasional appearances on the bench and getting pushed on as a striker isn’t doing his career much good.

Christie has a fledging international career to consider which is likely to see him push for a move, a season on the sidelines isn’t going to do him any good.

With the English transfer window closed a compromise deal could see him sign a one year contract extension then go out on loan to an English Championship side, a third loan to Aberdeen won’t be happening.

TONY RALSTON

Seeing Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa- both with a season left on their contracts- competing for the right-back slot wasn’t on the cards a year ago when Ralston was being compared to Kieran Tierney.

It has been a rapid decline from squaring up to Neymar but despite signing a new contract in December his progress has virtually halted.

By all accounts he did well on loan at Dundee United but he really needs a season of first team football to pick up on the promise he was showing a year ago.

DORUS DE VRIES

Very much the forgotten man of the club, he is free to go but has a year remaining on his contract with nothing yet fixed up elsewhere.

He was in line to play at Ibrox in March but a late injury opened the door to Scott Bain who took the chance and signed a four year contract in the summer.

At the age of 37 he has to decide whether to hang around for another season on good money or whether to get back in the firing line.

CALVIN MILLER

With Emilio Izaguirre signed up Brendan Rodgers has gone on record that he wants to get Miller out for first team football.

Most SPFL Premiership clubs are interested but at this stage in the transfer window manager have already put their defence together.

Miller has been harshly compared to KT, not many young players would come out of that favourably but with a solid season behind him his game could blossom.

JONNY HAYES

Daniel Arzani’s signing has knocked the former Aberdeen winger down the pecking order with the young Australian joining Mikey Johnston and Lewis Morgan in the queue for wing places.

It is sink or swim at Celtic with Hayes failing to make the sort of impression at Tynecastle last week that would put him in contention for similar fixtures.

A loan deal to the English Championship should give him the chance to pick up on game time, by January the wing positions at Celtic could be much clearer.
