The earlier start and relentless nature of this season’s Champions League qualification process has started to produce some big name casualties.

Last night Celtic accounted for the champions of Norway with Rosenborg regulars in the group stage during the nineties.

Happily joining Rosenborg in the Europa League were Polish champions Legia Warsaw with memories not fading too much of the matches from 2014 and the aftermath.

Champions route regulars Hapoel Beer Sheva and Ludogorets are also among the casualties with any signs of weakness being sussed out at this point of the season.

In the non-champions route to the group stage Basel were the biggest casualties. Last season they managed a 2-1 win away to Manchester City in the last 16 after losing 4-0 at home but a 3-0 home defeat from PAOK ended this season’s adventures.

Ahead of next week’s third round matches the draw for the play-off stage will take place on Monday.
