The SPFL are looking to set up a new contract to sell Scottish football internationally.

Media group MP & Silva has defaulted on payments to the SPFL allowing them out of the current ten year deal.

Scottish games are regularly shown live on networks such as Fox Sports and beIN Sport but that has been halted this season due to the demise of MP & Silva.

A ten year media deal seems like an act of madness, in England the EPL sell their rights for three years at a time.

Setting up a new deal won’t make much of an impact on club finances, certainly not at Celtic but it will put the SPFL in a better place to negotiate future domestic broadcasting deals.

According to the Daily Record:

A Hampden source confirmed last night: “The SPFL are in the process of terminating their agreement with MP & Silva.

“One possibility is that we sell the TV rights to another agency on a like-for-like basis and then they are free to subcontract it around the world.

If we get the right money that’s the easiest thing to do.

But there is such strong interest from broadcasters all over the world that we could deal directly with them and sell the Scottish game to them individually.

It’s an exciting opportunity to get better value for the game.”

Every club in the top flight is able to sell their own matches overseas but that only reaches the most dedicated of supporters paying by subscription.

Fox and beIN can ensure a much bigger audience which will appeal to future sponsors.
