There was no sympathy waiting for Dedryck Boyata following his red card against St Johnstone.

The defender was sent off in stoppage time after a prolonged exchange with John Beaton leaving the hoops with ten men for the closing stages.

Television pictures clearly showed the anger in Beaton’s face as he switched from a yellow card to red but Rodgers’ only concern was over the actions of his defender.

It is a stupid red card, he has got enough opportunities to not get sent off,” the Celtic boss told The Sun.

It was a very emotional game towards the end. Dedryck feels as if he should have got a free-kick and didn’t get it.

In fairness to John, he gives him a chance not to get the red card. It’s not what we would want.”

Boyata will now serve a one match suspension which could be against Aberdeen on Saturday or in the Betfred Cup semi-final against Hearts.

In some instances suspensions in the SPFL Premiership can be served in the SPFL Betfred Cup and vice versa depending on the severity of the incident.

Leigh Griffiths scored the only goal of the game last night to take Celtic into their fifth successive semi-final under Rodgers.

Hearts reached the last four by defeating Motherwell 4-2 with the SPFL expected to announce the dates and venues this week for the match scheduled for the weekend of October 27/28.
