Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Celtic suggested to Marvin Compper that he’d be better off quitting the club in order to get regular first team football.

The 33-year-old was identified last December as the solution to Celtic’s defensive issues ad officially joined the club on January 1.

After losing 4-0 to Hearts at Tynecastle Kris Ajer established himself in the side while £1m signing Jack Hendry featured in 11 SPFL matches after being signed on transfer deadline day.

In contrast Compper played in 83 minutes of a Scottish Cup tie at home to Morton and is highly unlikely to add to that tally.

The former Leipzig defender has been speaking about how settled he is in Glasgow but on the pitch he hasn’t even played in a reserve match with his prospects waning by the week.

Asked whether Compper would get a chance Rodgers told the Daily Record: “I’m not sure, when Marvin came to the club last year we wanted to use his experience. He was injured in that first six months.

I made it clear to him in the summer there were players who came in during that six months and they had jumped ahead of him.

It was made clear to him if he wanted to play regularly in the last few years of his career then he’d have to move.

He decided he wanted to stay and you have to respect his decision but there are players who have jumped ahead of him in the queue and it’s clear his game time is going to be limited.”

Compper wasn’t registered for Celtic’s Europa League squad and will watch tonight’s match from his home in Glasgow.

Last season he started two matches for RB Leipzig before making his switch to Celtic.
