Brendan Rodgers has backed Leigh Griffiths’ decision to pull out of the Scotland squad for the matches against Israel and Portugal.

The hoops striker was widely criticised for his decision to work on his fitness with many pundits claiming that there were other reasons for the move.

Alex McLeish sent out mixed messages about not throwing Griffiths under a bus, warning him that there were no future guarantees and also bringing up the strikers private life. It’s understood that Griffiths doesn’t have a £2m outstanding tax bill.

Griffiths opted to spend the international fortnight putting in extra training at Lennoxtown and will be in the spotlight tomorrow against Hibs.

Domestically he’ll go head to head with Steven Naismith over the following weekends with McLeish making it clear that the Hearts striker is his first pick.

After missing Celtic’s last two matches Scott Brown is available for tomorrow’s match against his former club.
