Dedryck Boyata has admitted that it’s back to basics now after Belgium’s remarkable defeat from Switzerland.

Leading 2-0 it seemed like plain sailing for Roberto Martinez’s side but an incredible collapse saw the Swiss score five times to top their Nations League group.

Boyata has enjoyed an incredible year, especially on the international stage but was in the firing line after the loss to the Swiss.

With no international matches scheduled until March there is no early opportunity to get that result out of his system although Celtic’s fixture glut until the end of December will keep everyone in the Scotland squad busy.

I won’t be sleeping very well for many days now,” Boyata told the Evening Times. “At 2-0 up, it should have been a time for us to control the game – instead the opposite happened.

Many of our players were below their best against Switzerland and I have to include myself in that. It wasn’t a lack of motivation and we didn’t underestimate them.

We just had a very bad night defensively. It’s time for me to go back to basics and take it from there.

After such a great World Cup, to come down to a level of performance like that wasn’t good enough and we will have to seriously analyse what went wrong.”

Boyata made three appearances at the World Cup Finals as Belgium finished in third place, beaten only by winners France.

With his Celtic contract expiring in June the experienced defender is entitled to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club from January 1.
