Damien Duff is under consideration for a coaching role at Celtic.

SunSport understands that the Irishman has held talks over a position on the Hoops’backroom staff.

The vacancy comes after Shaun Maloney quit to take up a full time job working with the Belgian international side, Tommy McIntyre has been in charge of the Development/Reserve side for four years.

Duff is currently coaching the Shamrock Rovers u-15 side after returning to his home city following a career that covered Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea, Newcastle and Fulham during which he picked up 100 international caps.

Rather than move into a high profile coaching role the 39-year-old wants to get hands on in the background before he steps into front-line management.

As a player he never disguised his affection for Celtic, in 2008 he enjoyed a weekend trip to Glasgow with Shay Given and Stephen Carr to watch Gordon Strachan’s side enjoy a 3-2 win over the old Rangers club on route to winning the SPL title.

With just 18 Reserve League fixtures Duff will have plenty of time to learn from Brendan Rodgers on the training ground with both men spending time together at Chelsea a decade ago.
