John Hartson has hit out at the moronic element inside Ibrox on Saturday who sang about their hatred of Leigh Griffiths.

The striker is currently taking a break from football to deal with personal issues which has unleashed a fresh wave of attacks from fans of the Ibrox club.

Predictably there hasn’t been a word of criticism from either club, the SFA, SPFL or even PFA Scotland who all seem fearful of commenting on matters relating to the Ibrox fan-base never mind taking action.

The issue doesn’t involve a small minority, all evidence points to many thousands, probably the bulk of the fans inside Ibrox on Saturday abusing Griffiths in song as well as their traditional hatreds of Ireland, Catholics and Jock Stein.

While most prefer to praise the poisonous atmosphere Hartson cut to the chase in his Evening Times column.

I don’t think you’ll ever be rid of that moronic element but on Saturday I heard the singing directed towards Leigh Griffiths at Ibrox and you do just wonder what goes through people’s heads at times.

It is too simplistic to say that Griff will want to come back and shut them up with his performances because right now I think he has bigger things on his mind. But no-one needs that level of agitation and disrespect.

It is a reminder that there is still so much work to be done when it comes to educating people and it is depressing in this day and age that it is still acceptable to poke fun at someone who has been dealing with pretty serious issues.

I played football for a long time, I spent my life in dressing rooms and I appreciate what goes on around football. But I just think that sometimes there is a line in the sand which you have to question.

It seems that the lack of action from Celtic’s 5-1 win at Ibrox in April 2017 has given the morons encouragement to do as they please.

On that occasion Scott Sinclair was racially abused, Scott Brown was threatened by a pitch invader with missiles including a full sized battery thrown at Celtic players.

After that match no action was taken with neither club commenting on the actions witnessed by millions on television.
