Josh Maja is apparently close to completing a £3.5m move to Bordeaux.
The transfer is being reported by the Newcastle based Chronicle Live website but seems far fetched with a cross border transfer in the summer costing just £300,000 using UEFA criteria.
Maja is in the final months of his three year deal with his 16 goal haul driving Jack Ross’ bid to return Sunderland to The Championship at the first time of asking.
Celtic have been strongly linked with the 20-year-old, highlighting the route that Moussa Dembele took from playing for Fulham in The Championship to scoring in the Champions League.
Maja turned down Sunderland’s offer of a new contract earlier this month forcing the issue into the spotlight.
Sunderland are hoping to keep the striker until the end of the season but it’s unlikely that they’ll retain the player and pick up a healthy transfer fee when Bordeaux could sign the player in the summer for a tenth of the price being quoted.
