Paddy McCourt summed up the feelings of many Celtic supporters as news broke about Brendan Rodgers holding talks about leaving Celtic for Leicester City.

The man known as the Derry Pele was signed by Gordon Strachan, made his breakthrough under Tony Mowbray then thrived under Neil Lennon as he became a cult hero to the Celtic support during five eventful years.

With his habit of only scoring spectacular goals boyhood fan McCourt seemed the ideal match for Celtic, much like fellow Irishman Rodgers when he became manager.

The former Liverpool boss took over from Ronnie Deila in May 2016 and instantly delivered the club it’s first treble since 2001 under Martin O’Neill.

With a new four year contract signed in May 2017 Celtic fans chanted that Rodgers was ‘here for 10-in-a-row’ but that myth was shattered by the new this morning.

At 10am Celtic confirmed that permission had been granted for Rodgers to speak to Leicester with confirmation of the deal expected within 48 hours.

Neil Lennon has been touted as a caretaker manager but with vital matches coming up away to Hearts and Hibs this week the hoops face a very difficult time as Rodgers moves elsewhere.
