Steven Gerrard struck rock bottom yesterday when he accused Neil Lennon and John Kennedy of playing the victim card.

After 15 years playing for Liverpool he will have heard that phrase chanted by opposition supporters as English fans dredge through the gutter, point scoring over genuine tragedies that have effected families across Merseyside.

If he knows his history he should be able to recall the first club to contact Liverpool after Hillsborough to provide support and a way back onto the football pitch.

Fronting things up ahead of playing Hearts tonight Gerrard told The Sun: “Neil Lennon will say what Neil Lennon wants to say. His assistant will say whatever he wants to say.

If they want to play the victim card, that’s up to them. No problem. For me, the Old Firm is done. They won the game. There were a lot of talking points and flashpoints and I’ve spoken about them all.

Things happen in Old Firm games that people are going to talk about.”

Focusing on Neil Lennon and Scott Brown will provide a very useful distraction for Gerrard with his team now five matches without a win.

That run arrived at a time when Celtic should have been at their most vulnerable following the sudden departure of Brendan Rodgers to Leicester City.

Celtic’s performances have been far from convincing but they have won matches, progressed in the Scottish Cup and added five points to their advantage at the top of the SPFL.

Having admitted that Alfredo Morelos had crossed a line and let down his team-mates and supporters with his red card on Sunday Gerrard earned respect for facing up to the glaringly obvious. His comments since then have had the reverse effect.
