Mikael Lustig’s future at Celtic is in doubt with the one year option on his contract still to be applied by the club.

After playing for Sweden against Romania the defender revealed that he expected the situation to be resolved within a week.

Today the Daily Record reports:

Lustig is awaiting news on a 12-month contract extension clause and Lennon added: “If I had my way he’d be here next season.”

Lennon signed Lustig on a free transfer from Rosenborg in January 2012 with the defender playing a key role in the early run of title successes.

During the 2016/17 season he looked to be back at his best but the last two campaigns have been hampered by injuries which have greatly reduced his attacking threat.

Constant internationals including Sweden’s run to the last eight of the World Cup Finals in Russia appear to have taken their toll but it’s obvious that the 32-year-old is a favourite of the caretaker manager.

If contract decisions are outwith Lennon’s remit it would suggest that other players are being looked at or that a wage cut is required by the club.

Lustig signed a two year contract extension in January 2017 with the club having the option of adding a further 12 months on the same terms.
