Bobby Madden has praised John Beaton’s performance in the December Glasgow derby.

Following the match and the SFA’s decision not to take any retrospective action Celtic issued a statement demanding an explanation into why attacks on Scott Brown, Ryan Christie and Tony Ralston went unpunished. Celtic’s request was ignored by the SFA.

Pictures later emerged of Beaton enjoying himself in the Crown Inn, Bellshill among fans of the Ibrox club.

Soon after Celtic’s statement the Press Association released a story claiming that Beaton had received abusive text messages, by the following day his family had suffered death threats with a Police guard apparently provided for him at his next match, at Somerset Park, home of Ayr United.

On Saturday Beaton will be in charge of Celtic’s potential title clincher at Aberdeen as the dust settles on his display at Ibrox.

In an interview with Radio Clyde last night Madden said:

I was actually fourth official at the match in question with John and I thought he had a very good game. That was the feeling at the side of the pitch.

Then you get these incidents that have happened with individuals and it’s difficult to think what is going through these people’s minds.

But it is good to see the police have taken the strongest action and one person has already appeared in court on the back of those allegations.

That’s a positive that the police have taken it that seriously because no-one who goes to their workplace should be faced with that level of abuse.”

On Sunday Madden will be at Ibrox as Hibs take on Steven Gerrard’s side.
