David Wagner has been appointed as the new manager of Schalke 04 ending speculation that he could be on his way to Celtic.

The 47-year-old resigned as manager of Huddersfield in January after taking them into the EPL for the first time and staying up despite having the smallest budget in the division.

In the print edition of The Mirror [17/04/2019, p55], claimed that he was under consideration to replace Brendan Rodgers but tonight he has returned to the club that he served as a player for two years between 1995 and 1997.

Wagner was billed as a ‘mini-Klopp’ when he took charge of Huddersfield and lived up to the hype by taking them into the EPL via the 2017 play-off.

Since taking over as caretaker manager at the end of February Neil Lennon has listened to reports linking managers such as Roberto Martinez, Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho.

Lennon is unbeaten in 10 matches as caretaker and remains the bookies favourite to be in charge of Celtic next season.
