Scott Bain has no regrets over his fall out with Neil McCann- telling the former Dundee boss that cream always rises to the top!

Back in October 2017 the keeper’s world was turned upside down as he refused to accept being blamed for Dundee losing to Hamilton Accies.

Bain declined to back down and was given the Siberia treatment as he trained with the youth team and traveled as an unused substitute for Development League matches.

Having worked his way into the game as a part-timer at Alloa and full time labourer he stood his ground despite the harm that it did to his career after successfully appealing to the SPFL against a club fine.

In January he went on loan to Hibs but an injury to Craig Gordon saw him move to Celtic in a transfer triangle that saw Scott Allan move to Hibs with Simon Murray ending up at Dens Park.

Recalling that episode Bain told BBC Scotland:

“I wouldn’t change anything that happened at Dundee,” he says. “I don’t regret a thing. I stood up for what was right and it can be difficult for players to do that. You can be forgotten about real quick in football. I felt it was right to stand up and say I wasn’t accepting it [the punishment] and whatever comes with that, you have to take it. I was happy to take the consequences.”

He says he can laugh now, but those were dark days. He carpooled with Kevin Holt, Jack Hendry and Lewis Spence and there were times when he didn’t want to get in the car and on the road again for training with the youngsters. “I just didn’t want the manager at the time to have any effect on ruining my career,” he explains.

“People fall out. Words are said in the heat of the moment but I’ve not got any animosity or hatred towards him. What happened, happened. It could have been handled better on both parts but we’ve moved on. Football has a funny way of cream rising to the top.”

After making his Celtic debut at Ibrox in March 2018 before becoming Celtic’s first choice keeper in January 2019 to complete a clean sweep of domestic honours after being used in the Betfred Cup in the earlier stage of the season.

McCann was sacked by Dundee in October and has reverted back to his previous role as pundit with Sky Sports and BBC Scotland.
