The transfer war is in danger of descending into a battle among publishers to discredit stories from their rivals.

Late on Saturday night Derek McGregor of The Sun reported that Celtic had been turned down by Aberdeen with a £5m bid for Scott McKenna, the same reporter broke the ‘£15m Arsenal bid for Tierney’ that everyone was happy to run with all through Saturday.

At 8.15 with no by-line beside the story The Record bounded back with:

Aberdeen have not received a bid from Celtic for star defender Scott McKenna. Record Sport understands reports of a £5million offer being knocked back are wide of the mark.

Celtic have very obvious needs for a central defender but after 18 months in the Aberdeen first team there aren’t many hoops fans impressed by McKenna.

Last season’s bid from Brendan Rodgers didn’t impress many fans with a mixture of shock and relief over a £4m bid being knocked back.

Aston Villa were reported to have topped that with a £6m bid which the Dons turned down with the player under contract until 2023.
