Neil Lennon has confirmed Celtic’s interest in Jose Cifuentes.
The midfielder impressed for Ecuador at the u-20 World Cup Finals in Poland and is expected to be on the move to Europe.
Manchester City have been linked with Cifuentes but would struggle to get a work permit and would have to send him out on loan. Celtic could be a loan option, Daniel Arazani is in Glasgow on a two year loan deal, with Lennon confirming but guarded over Celtic’s interest in Cifuentes.
Before tonight’s 2-1 win over Sarajevo the Celtic boss told Radio Scotland:
I can conform that there is an interest, again it’s a player that we know very little about but he is one that has come up on the radar, that’s all that I can say about it.
After the first leg in Sarajevo last week Lennon was asked about Sergio Quintero and responded by saying that he had never heard of him.
Now it seems that Celtic are in contention to sign his team-mate Cifuentes which would put a major question mark over the future of Olivier Ntcham who also prefers playing in a holding midfielder role.
Celtic have until 11pm tomorrow to register new players for their second round Champions League qualifier against Nomme Kalju but two wild card signings can be added by 11pm on Tuesday, the day before the first leg.
