Celtic will have to pay out £2.5m to sign Romaine Sawyers from Brentford.

On Saturday morning the midfielder was named as a Celtic target with reports of a failed £1.5m bid rejected later in the day.

Sawyers has a year left on his Brentford contract, at the age of 27 his next contract will be the most significant of his career with Celtic keen to bring him north of the border.

The Sun reports:

BRENTFORD are holding out for £2.5million for Celtic target Romaine Sawyers. SunSport revealed yesterday the Hoops had a £1.5m bid for midfielder Sawyers rejected and Neil Lennon is set to launch an improved offer for the ex-West Brom ace. But Sawyers is also being chased by Stoke after impressing in England’s second tier last season — meaning Brentford are prepared to wait for their £2.5m price tag to be met before they’d be prepared to sell the St Kitts & Nevis international.

Sawyers has been a regular in the Brentford side since his move from Walsall three years ago but has only managed six league goals, last season he failed to find the net in 41 appearances.

Despite that scoring record he seems highly rated by supporters although talks on a new deal with the London club don’t appear to have progressed.

Having shown interest in David Turnbull and Rekeem Harper Neil Lennon appears keen to bring in a midfielder.

Olivier Ntcham is expected back at Lennoxtown this week with Lennon expected to be asked about the Frenchman’s wish to leave when he speaks to the media to preview tomorrow’s Champions League qualifier against FK Sarajevo.
