Steven Gerrard has taken to his club’s in-house TV service to throw Andy Gray, Keith Jackson and the Daily Record under the bus over a claim that his side are poised to win the SPFL title.

This morning the Record’s army of readers were treated to the information that Gerrard had told Gray that his squad can win the title following a heart-to heart chat after Sunday’s incredible 4-0 win over French aces Marseilles.

Winning the title, and stopping Celtic at eight is the message that most Record readers want to hear but by back-tracking and contradicting the Glasgow based publisher Gerrard may be creating a powerful enemy.

Covering his in-house TV interview The Sun reports Gerrard saying:

I haven’t been misquoted because I haven’t said anything in terms of winning the league. So I categorically deny anyone who claims that I’m saying we’re going to win the league.

I think that’d be very naive and stupid on my behalf. I always show humility when I’m talking about competing for the main things. What’s for certain is that we’re in good shape and the squad’s looking strong, and we’ll do everything we can to challenge on all fronts in every competition.

But we’ll always show respect. We’ll never claim that we’re going to do something and be naive. So I was quite surprised to read those headlines as well.

Since winning the dead rubber derby clash at the end of last season there has been non-stop discussion about stopping Celtic’s run of success.

Current players, former players and all sorts of other expert views have been sought to drum up confidence fuelled by four free transfers, two development fee signings, £600,000 spent on an Oldham starlet and £3m spent on a Swede who made less appearances in Serie A last season that Bruno Alves.

Having publicly had their rallying call trashed by the current manager the Record may now revert to a level of objective coverage of the Gerrard Revolution.
