Celtic have been linked with Gideon Mensah on the same day as seperate reports have played down expectations over signing Greg Taylor and Birger Meling.

The full-back positions seem the most obvious areas of the squad in need of strengthening but three years after joining RB Salzburg he has still to play a competitive game for the Austrian champions.

According to Ghanasoccernet Celtic are looking to Austria for a second left-back after signing Boli Bolingoli from Rapid Vienna.

They report:

Red Bull Salzburg defender Gideon Mensah will decide by the close of today (Tuesday) whether he will join Scottish side Celtic or Zulte Waregem of Belgium, GHANASoccernet.com can exclusively report.

Also, Austrian top-flight side Sturm Graz where he spent the second half of last season and flourished in 15 league matches want to re-sign him on another season-long loan deal.

Celtic have clearly been scouting Austria closely but without a game for his parent club he would surely be viewed as cover for Bolingoli rather than competition. Last season Gideo (age 21) played 14 league matches on loan at Sturm Graz.

Reports this morning suggested that a £3m starting price had curtailed interest in Taylor while there is little sign of genuine interest in Meling.

On Sunday Neil Lennon announced that he was expecting to have two or three new signings in his squad for Sweden but less than 24 hours before the flight to Stockholm there doesn’t appear to be any business on the brink of being completed.
