Celtic’s attempts to sign Lee O’Connor look like going all the way to the last hour of the transfer window.

Talks with the 19-year-old defender have been progressing since lunchtime as Neil Lennon looks to boost his first team squad with one eye to the future.

With Manchester United splashing out £130m to sign Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan Bissaka it’s been made clear to O’Connor that he has little chance of making the breakthrough at Old Trafford.

Rather than join the circuit of going out on loan to various clubs he has expressed an interest in joining Celtic for a token fee with Manchester United getting a large slice of any sell-on fee.

The genuine prospect of first team football, including in Europe, has been enough to convince the Irish youth internationalist to investigate a move to Scotland.

Celtic have until midnight to complete the transfer and register new signings with the SFA and SPFL, earlier tonight the club confirmed the signing of Greg Taylor on a four year contract.
