Kris Ajer faces a battle to be fit for Celtic’s opening Europa League tie away to Rennes on September 19.

The defender suffered a groin strain after less than 15 minutes of the Europa League win over AIK forcing him to miss out Sunday’s derby day win at Ibrox.

Ajer has already been ruled out of Norway’s double header against Malta and Sweden with just one club match, away to Hamilton, before Celtic go into the Europa League.

“I’ve been told I have to rest for two weeks,” the defender the defender told The Sun.

Playing on the artificial turf at Hamilton may not be the best idea for a player recovering from a muscle injury. With Nir Bitton picking up an injury at Ibrox Neil Lennon may bring in Lee O’Connor for the match at Hamilton with the Irish youth internationalist comfortable in any defensive role.

Hatem Abd Elhamed took over from Bitton in central defence at Ibrox with Moritz Bauer coming on for his debut just four days after signing on loan from Stoke City.
