Having played a leading role in the pre-match cheer-leading Barry Ferguson had humble pie to deal with after Sunday’s Glasgow derby defeat.

The Kelty Hearts boss had been seduced by all those summer signings, dramatic wins at Kilmarnock and St Mirren alongside the Mr Gerrard factor.

Throw in two Ibrox wins in last season’s derby matches, the exit of Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon leading Celtic to an embarrassing Champions League exit against Cluj and Sunday was all set to be a day of red, white and blue celebrations.

By the time the Celtic side was announced expectation was at fever pitch not matched since the Pre Season Cup was clinched for a fourth successive time- and then Bobby Madden blew his whistle.

Celtic booted the ball straight into touch and suddenly it emerged that the hoops had arrived in town with a plan.

Lennon’s brand new defence featuring three players with less than a dozen Celtic appearances to their name settled instantly, passed the ball to each other then the underdogs SCORED!

It wasn’t going to plan, Tav wasn’t charging down the wing, Davo and Jack were on their heels chasing back after Scott Brown with Alfredo Morelos replacing Jermain Defoe. They’d have been as well throwing on Kyle Lafferty for all the impact that their strikers made.

It looks like being a long post mortem for Gerrard to endure but the arrival of Ryan Kent and the discovery that they won the corner count on Sunday should soon restore delusions after the pain of a reality check.
