For a few seconds Ryan Christie thought that he had scored his first international goal.

Twelve minutes into the match with San Marino at a sodden Hampden, in-between taking corner kicks from both flanks, the Celtic midfielder cut in from the right wing and curled a shot in gowards.

It was the breakthrough that Scotland needed but on route into the net it appears to have brushed the bootlace of John McGinn. The Aston Villa man instantly raised his hand as he broke away to celebrate.

Sky Sports showed a number of real-time replays that failed to show a clear touch from McGinn but the goal was credited to the former Hibs and St Mirren midfielder.

McGinn most certainly scored Scotland’s second and third goals, despite the torrential rain making parts of the pitch unplayable the game was played to a finish with Scotland winning 6-0.

Christie will sit out Saturday’s match against Ross County due to suspension but will be available for te Europa League tie at home to Lazio before missing the SPFL match away to Aberdeen.
