Chris Sutton has warned Steven Gerrard that he will become another Ibrox casualty if he fails to lift a trophy this season.

The former Liverpool youth coach finished second in the SPFL last season and nowhere in the cup competitions in his honeymoon season at Ibrox.

Ally McCoist, Stuart McCall, Mark Warburton, Kenny McDowall, Graeme Murty and Pedro Caixinha all failed to bring anything more significant than the Petrofac Cup to Ibrox and left the club as broken men.

Gerrard has stirred up hope more than any other boss with two wins in the Glasgow derby last season greeted with euphoria despite no silverware to show.

Dave King came up with £10m during the summer to sign Filip Helander and Ryan Kent, despite a turnover in the 2018 accounts of £33m, with the pressure firmly on the manager to deliver trophies and equally as important STOP CELTIC.

“The truth is a lot of Rangers fans think their team have cracked it this season,” Sutton told the Daily Record. “Whatever people say about Gerrard and the team improving as he has been given the money and players, he didn’t win a trophy last season.

“That’s not me giving him a kicking, it’s a fact. If they don’t win something this season, the chances are they will implode because everything has been building so well.

“They were impressive in Europe. I know Porto are not what they were but the way Rangers passed the ball against them showed they were a good team.

“Gerrard coming north is a big deal for the profile of Scottish football. It’s risen but ultimately he needs to win something. That’s the pressure of managing Celtic and Rangers.

“If I’m honest, the team that finishes second in the league… I don’t see their manager lasting to next season. It’s that big.”

Tonight, BT Sport will cover the action from Dingwall as Gerrard’s side face Ross County trailing Celtic on goal difference after 10 matches.
