Neil Lennon has hinted that he could ask Steve Clarke to use his players sparingly.

On Saturday Scotland are away to Cyprus before completing their European Championship qualifying group at home to Kazakhstan three days later.

With their qualification hopes long since ended the matches are on academic interest and of more value for Clarke in terms of spending time on the training ground with the players.

Arsenal kept Kieran Tierney out of the squad in order to manage his recuperation with Clarke frustrated by that development with the defender fit to play for his club in the Europa League.

Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie and James Forrest have been playing non-stop since July 9 when Celtic played Sarajevo in a Champions League qualifier.

Speaking to the Daily Record Lennon said:

Hopefully the international boys go away and are successful but come back fit and healthy. It’s difficult. I know Arsenal have done it with Kieran Tierney but it’s also important for Steve to have our players there. Whether we can have a chat about how much of a contribution they can make is another thing.

Despite failing in the group phase Scotland still have a route into the European Championships next summer with some matches scheduled to be played at Hampden.

Due to finishing above Albania and Israel in their Nations League group Scotland have the chance to reach the finals by winning two one-off matches in March.
