Tobias Stieler will referee Thursday’s Europa League tie between Lazio and Celtic.

The 38-year-old German is in his fourth season of taking charge of Europa League group matches but this will be his first time refereeing a Celtic match. Last month he was given his first Champions League group match when he was in charge of Atalanta in their 2-1 home defeat from Shakhtar Donetsk.

With Celtic leading Group E at the halfway point a win for Neil Lennon’s side on Thursday night will put them into them into the knock out phase with two matches left to play.

As well as matters on the park Stieler will be keeping an eye on events off the pitch with UEFA enforcing a partial closure with the Curva Nord out of bounds for home fans.

That sanction will have little effect with Lazio admitting yesterday that their fans had only bought 5,000 tickets for the match.

In contrast Celtic have been given an allocation of 9,000 tickets for the game with thousands of non-season ticket holders expected to travel and buy tickets locally.
