Celtic fans were delighted with the news that Callum McGregor has signed a new five-year contract.
The midfielder was already under contract until 2022 but after the departure of Kieran Tierney for Arsenal in the summer nothing can be taken for granted.
There have been regular suggestions that Brendan Rodgers was hoping to entice the midfielder to Leicester City but that seems dead and buried, for a year or two at least.
McGregor was a late developer compared to many of his youth team peers at Celtic but after being given his debut at the age of 21 by Ronny Deila he has gone about cementing his place in the team.
Initially used as an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal his game has evolved where he now plays a deeper role but still has licence to push forward for goals.
Earlier this season he captained Celtic when Scott Brown was rested for the Betfred Cup tie against Partick Thistle, with his new contract there is every chance that he could take on that role on a more permanent basis.
Over the last week Celtic have also announced new contracts for James Forrest and Scott Bain.
