Ryan Christie has opened talks about extending his contract beyond 2022.

The goalscoring midfielder has been in outstanding form over the last 13 months after it looked like his Celtic career was about to fizzle out.

Christie started last season on the fringes of Brendan Rodgers’ side with the clock ticking down on the final months of his deal.

In the semi-final of the League Cup at Murrayfield last season Rodgers’ went for Olivier Ntcham and Eboue Kouassi in the centre of the park with Tom Rogic in an advanced role.

A half-time shuffle saw Christie join Callum McGregor in central midfield as Celtic destroyed Hearts with the former Inverness Caley Thistle man going from strength to strength.

In November he agreed a new contract but talks are underway to provide another contract that will take him up with the highest earners at Celtic.

Speaking to The Sun about contract talks Christie said:

I am playing for an unbelievable team and playing some of the best football of my career. So I can’t think of a better place to kick on.

It is still kind of very early days, just a few chats, that is it. I think now with the amount of games in December it is probably the last thing on my mind.

I just want to focus on the football with cup finals and other big games coming up, and more towards the end of the season that will take care of itself.

Christie is a certain starter in Neil Lennon’s side for today’s League Cup Final at Hampden.
