Steven Gerrard has cruelly killed off the Olivier Giroud moonbeam after less than 24 hours.

Overnight on Christmas Day it seems that someone managed to get L’Equipe to add the club from Ibrox onto a list of clubs interested in the Chelsea striker including the heartening phrase of ‘making contact’.

That was more than enough for many Scottish publishers to provide their readers with a feel-good story as the clock ticks down to another clash with Celtic.

Giroud has six months left on his Chelsea deal which is believed to pay him £110,000/week with a similar deal likely in the summer when he moves on as a free agent.

Worked up with a frenzy of Tav Mania, Jacko Mania and Morelos Mania the jigsaw was being put together for Giroud to head north to sign up to the Gerrard Revolution.

After the 1-0 win over Kilmarnock the moment of truth had to be confronted as the Daily Record informed its army of readers.

But it appears unlikely Giroud will be making the move to Rangers after Gerrard shot down the link with the former Arsenal star.

Gerrard said: “We are getting linked with some good players. I don’t know anything about it, to be honest. If someone knows something about it, give them my number. That’s the first I’ve heard of it. He’s a good player, though.”

Giroud has also been linked with the likes of Inter, Lyon, Marseille and Borussia Dortmund.

With a £10m funding gap for the season to be plugged Gerrard has already admitted that players will need to move on next month although interest in Greg Docherty, Andy King, Jamie Murphy and Eros Grezda is believed to be minimal.

At the November AGM a share issue in January was discussed although that seems as likely as Alex Rae’s promise of massive foreign investment next month.

On January 17 Sports Direct are expected to find out the extent of their damages award for the breach of contract from Dave King’s club.
