Celtic have been linked with a move for Motherwell’s Liam Donnelly.

The 22-year-old struggled last season in central defence but has been a revelation in central midfield this season with the Lanarkshire side sitting comfortably in third place at the winter break.

Donnelly’s sparkling start to the season included a double against Celtic in August but alongside his nine goals this season he has also picked up nine bookings and one red card.

Belfast Live reports:

Celtic are understood to be monitoring Northern Ireland and Motherwell midfielder Liam Donnelly with a view to a shock move before the end of the January transfer window.

Donnelly has impressed in his second season at Fir Park and has chipped in with nine goals in 20 games in all competitions for Stephen Robinson’s men.

And that has brought the 23-year-old onto the radar of other clubs who are ready to test Motherwell’s resolve to hold onto the player.

It seems very straightforward to link Celtic with an in-form Irishman playing for a club within 20 miles of Glasgow.

With Celtic seemingly close to signing Ismaila Soro it would appear that Donnelly would be somewhere down the line for a midfield place if he was to join Celtic.

Over the last two years Celtic have made offers for Trevor Carson and David Turnbull with Donnelly’s development this season quickly picked up on from scouting reports on Motherwell.

After signing a two year contract with Motherwell in 2018 Donnelly signed a new deal in October 2019 keeping him under contract at Motherwell until June 2022.
