Steven Gerrard has sparked fears that Alfredo Morelos is about to quit Ibrox.

The super-fit striker has barely missed a game through injury in his two and a half years in Scotland but three days before the transfer window closes he has discovered a calf injury.

That looks like ruling him out of tonight’s match against Ross County but with a £10m shortfall in the club accounts Morelos could have played his last game for the club.

Covering an in-house TV interview the Daily Record reports:

He told Rangers TV: “Yes, good question. Alfredo has not only been suspended, he’s had a small calf problem as well.

“So I need to check with the medical staff what the right decision to do with Alfredo is because we obviously don’t want to put him in any risk.

“It’s good to have him back available in the squad, we’ve got a lot of games coming up so I’ll make the right decision that’s not a risk to the player.”

The timing of the injury looks very suspicious with Gary McAllister failing to mention it as he talked up the return of Morelos at yesterday’s media conference.

After being sent off against Celtic on December 29 the former HJK Helsinki starlet served a three match suspension and was expected to lead the line tonight in place of Jermain Defoe.

Morelos took part in training last week without any hint of a set-back but with the clock racing towards Friday’s transfer deadline Director of Football has to find a way to fill the £10m black hole in the club accounts caused by over-spending.

In January 2012 the old Ibrox club accepted an offer of £5m for Nikica Jelavic after rejecting £12m from an unknown club five months earlier. On 14 February 2012 they went into administration before being put into liquidation.
