Jermain Defoe will be out of action for four or five weeks- in a best-case scenario!

The veteran striker suffered a calf injury during Wednesday’s win over Ross County and had to be stretchered off.

Straight after the match Steven Gerrard predicted a 2-4-week absence but at today’s media conference the Ibrox boss had gloomy news on the striker with the Ibrox boss telling The Sun:

Defoe is a little bit down at the moment after the injury which is natural. We are looking at around four, five weeks, best case scenario. We will do everything we can to get him back.

We will look to add a striker. Until I get a signature there is nothing to say except we are doing everything we can. At the moment we have one recognised number nine and we have a lot of fixtures in the next few weeks.

One thing I will not do is bring someone in for the sake of it. I will only do it if they are one of our targets who I believe will help us in the short and long-term.

Alfredo Morelos is the only fit striker currently at Ibrox with absolutely no sign of a bid coming in for the Colombian who has been sent off seven times in the last 17 months.

There has been reports of interest in bringing Flo Kamberi and Dylon Dykes to Ibrox but Hibs and Livingston will be looking for cash assurances before doing any business.

So far Director of Football Ross Wilson has still to bring in a transfer fee with the club hoping to offload Greg Docherty, Jordan Jones, Glenn Middleton and Brandon Barker before the transfer window closes.

Last weekend Defoe signed a pre-contract deal to stay on at Ibrox next season.
