Hagi is on his way to Ibrox to solve Steven Gerrard’s injury crisis. Ianis, not Gheorghe the legendary Romanian midfielder of the nineties.

A calf injury for Jermain Defoe last night against Ross County set off alarm bells forcing Sporting Director Ross Wilson into doing something.

Hagi Jnr impressed at the u-21 European Championships last summer but has struggled to make an impact since moving from Vitorul to Genk.

The 22-year-old has started just six matches this season with Belgian website Hin reporting

Ianis Hagi (21) is on his way to the Glasgow Rangers. Genk has an oral agreement with coach Steven Gerrard’s team about a loan until the end of the season. A purchase option is also provided for in the agreement.

Ianis Hagi leaves Racing Genk for the Glasgow Rangers. The Romanian midfielder is on loan until the end of the season. He is expected in Glasgow today to take his medical tests. The son of Gheorghe Hagi came for FC Viitorul for four million at the start of this season, but could not continue at Genk. Neither under Felice Mazzu nor under Hannes Wolf could he get a permanent place.

Hagi is now moving to Glasgow in the hope of collecting more minutes of play. He also wants to put himself in the spotlight with a view to the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer in which Romania can participate. In 19 games for Genk this season, he was good for three goals and four assists. The Rangers are currently second in the Scottish Premier League on five points from leader Celtic.

Hagi played 48 minutes of first team football for Fiorentina in the 2016/17 season before returning to Viitorul where his dad is the owner and manager. Gerrard can already call on Ryan Jack, Steve Davis, Scott Arfield, Glen Kamara and Andy Halliday for a midfield place.
