James Tavernier looked a broken man as he faced up to his club’s TV channel after last night’s defeat at Kilmarnock.

Part of the deal of being captain is that you are sent out to face the media following set-backs with the former Wigan Athletic starlet familiar with that scenario over the last two seasons.

While the interviewer fished around for some crumbs of consolation Tav refused to bite with one of the most negative interviews imaginable.

The dream of leading the club to the SPFL Premiership title looks as far away as ever with the euphoria of beating Celtic at the end of December already a distant memory.

There was virtually no sympathy for Tav from fans who are reluctantly agreeing with Chris Sutton’s assessment that he is a serial loser.

Under Mark Warburton, Graeme Murty, Pedro Caixinha and now Steven Gerrard he has become part of the furniture for every significant defeat.

After years as a utility man in the mid-reaches of the English game he has found himself pitched in against the most prolific domestic trophy winning side that the Scottish game has ever witnessed.

As he mumbled his way through ‘y’know’ 11 times during the interview it seems that another trophyless season is going to take much more explaining after the celebrations of December 29 at Celtic Park.
