James Tavernier looked a broken man as he faced up to his club’s TV channel after last night’s defeat at Kilmarnock.
Part of the deal of being captain is that you are sent out to face the media following set-backs with the former Wigan Athletic starlet familiar with that scenario over the last two seasons.
While the interviewer fished around for some crumbs of consolation Tav refused to bite with one of the most negative interviews imaginable.
The dream of leading the club to the SPFL Premiership title looks as far away as ever with the euphoria of beating Celtic at the end of December already a distant memory.
There was virtually no sympathy for Tav from fans who are reluctantly agreeing with Chris Sutton’s assessment that he is a serial loser.
Under Mark Warburton, Graeme Murty, Pedro Caixinha and now Steven Gerrard he has become part of the furniture for every significant defeat.
After years as a utility man in the mid-reaches of the English game he has found himself pitched in against the most prolific domestic trophy winning side that the Scottish game has ever witnessed.
As he mumbled his way through ‘y’know’ 11 times during the interview it seems that another trophyless season is going to take much more explaining after the celebrations of December 29 at Celtic Park.

A brutally honest and fair assessment is that Tav will go down as an absolute failure of a captain in one of the worst periods of our history in the top flight.
Huge questions over this Rangers XI, squad and back room staff.
Very worrying bears.

To be fair to him, he looks depleted like a lot of us so he knows how the fans are feeling

Don’t even get me started on you. Not tonight

Beyond depressing. The captain’s negativity is there for all to see.

Embarrassing interview ! Never a captain , doesn’t lead on the field and I believe he hasn’t earned the respect from other players ..we need someone to grab this team by the balls and get them motivated .. Tav will never be that guy #partysover

Standing there with his bake tripping him isn’t on. Someone needs to stand up with fire in their belly and tell us they will fix it, not show us the face of a broken man.

Not watching it. Why should I listen to a captain who delivers zero.

I can’t listen to you. Never mind look at you
