Graham Spiers has named Jim Traynor as the author of last night’s desperate statement from Ibrox.

A decade or two ago the two men shared press boxes across Scotland and Europe but there is clearly no love lost between the them now. In 1998 Trynor and Spiers joined Dave Murray for a long weekend in Jersey for gushing praise of his first decade as owner of Rangers.

Spiers is effectively in semi-retirement these days with a couple of commissions each week for The Times, Scotland and a couple of appearances on various Radio Scotland shows which rarely includes a call from their Sports Department.

Last night’s statement was bristling with anger for a variety of sources but only BBC Scotland is individually named.

There are strong hints towards comments made by Michael Stewart and Davie Provan who are both columnists for the Scottish Sun. Making an enemy of that publisher could backfire spectacularly on the Ibrox club.

As well as his role with the Daily Record, Traynor was also a regular on BBC Scotland, hosting programmes such as ‘What The Papers Say’ and the Saturday night phone-in ‘Your Call’ show.

His most famous moment in broadcasting was an on-air row with Chick Young in April 2011 when the two men accused each other of being Ibrox cheer-leaders and puppets. That incident is easily found on You Tube.

No name was put at the bottom of last night’s statement.
