Four Daily Record reports have expressed their criticism of the appointment of David Graham as the new Head of Media and Communications at Ibrox.

For generations anyone in a position of power at Ibrox would be assured of the friendliest of welcomes from the Glasgow based publisher but James Traynor’s successor will find a very different scenario when he takes charge.

In the season in which the club launched their ‘Everyone, Anyone’ programme of social inclusion it seems incredible that they have selected a sitting DUP councillor to push that campaign further forward. For good measure Graham is also a member of the Orange Order.

Aside from his political stance Graham has no real experience in two vital areas. Prior to taking up a full-time job with the DUP he was a school-teacher while it’s difficult to imagine any Belfast based politician having contacts and an in-depth understanding of the Scottish media.

Discussing the big issues of the week, the Record asks it’s Monday Jury ‘ Is the appointment of David Graham as the Rangers’ new PR chief the wrong move?

Gary Ralston: It’s a poor call. Perception is everything and this sends out the wrong messages when Rangers are trying to position themselves as a forward thinking, progressive organisation.

Craig Swan: It’s not the greatest of starts to have these things uncovered within days of being in post. Rangers can employ who they want. In turn, they’ll have to accept some of the flak that comes their way over it.

Ross Pilcher: I’m not a fan of retroactively digging stuff up from people’s past to use against them in these situations. But appointing a guy to run their comms who they knew was likely to be a story in himself was perhaps ill-advised.

Gavin Berry: It doesn’t look great, along with some other footage that has emerged, but it was nine years ago and everyone makes mistakes. However, he must prove none of his views are at odds with the club’s ‘Everyone, Anyone’ diversity and inclusion campaign.

Graham is expected to take up his new job in May.
