Paul McGowan has given a first hand account of the infamous fall-out between Scott Bain and Neil McCann that ended the keeper’s Dundee career.

Bain was in his fourth season at Dens Park when he started the home match against Hamilton Accies which was to have far reaching consequences for everyone involved at the club.

McGowan has had his share of heated incidents in and out of dressing rooms and decided to tell Si Ferry on Open Goal what really went on

“Do you know how he fell out with Dundee? We were playing a game. McCann always wanted to pass it from the back.

“One got cut out and he shouted over to McCann, ‘f*** off’. Neil McCann came in, he’s a hothead, and he said, ‘what did you say to me?’.

“We were getting beat 2-0, and Bainy was like that, ‘I told you to f*** off’. Instead of just lying, knowing what Neil McCann ‘s like… McCann was like, ‘you wit?’ and Bainy said, ‘I told you to f*** off’.

“We were all just sitting and McCann was like, ‘you told me to f*****g f*** off?’. He was right in his face. Bainy was just sitting there like, ‘aye’. He didn’t care.”

“I’m thinking, ‘f*** me!’

“McCann asked for the sub goalie to go and warm up but he never put him on. After that it was just a mess.

“He left him out but it’s actually probably been the best thing that’s ever happened to Bainy in all honesty.”

At the start of the January transfer window Neil Lennon took Bain on loan to Hibs before a bizarre set of circumstances kicked off.

An injury to Craig Gordon left Brendan Rodgers with Dorus de Vries as first choice keeper with no experienced back up.

After Motherwell knocked back a bid for Trevor Carson Celtic looked elsewhere. With Neil Lennon wanting Scott Allan to join him at Easter Road the midfielder was diverted away from Dundee, Bain moved to Celtic with Simon Murray moving to Dundee to complete the triangle.

Bain made his Celtic debut in the March Glasgow derby as Celtic enjoyed a dramatic 3-2 win at Ibrox, in January 2019 he took over from Craig Gordon as first choice keeper helping Celtic to complete the Treble having already played in the December Betfred Cup Final.
