Rather than face up to the reality of Dave King walking away a new saviour was pitched into the Ibrox mix last night- Graeme Souness!
So-called Money men and legends from the past being touted for jobs will always go down a treat among fans as they dream of a return to the days when trophy successes were regularly celebrated.
Former Rangers manager Walter Smith and former director Dave King have both chaired the club since ‘financial meltdown’ in 2012 but the only trophy to have arrived at Ibrox was the 2016 Petrofac Cup to provide an embarrassing momento of ‘The Journey’.
Another blast from the past, David Tanner, made the Souness suggestion on Twitter last night with memories flooding back of a previous glory spell for emotional fans of all ages.
Dave King has stood as Rangers chairman tonight.
Douglas Park in charge for now.
I interviewed Graeme Souness at an event this month. When I asked if he’d return to Ibrox, he gave a lot of thought and said he’d fancy an advisory board-type role.
Would fans like him as chairman? pic.twitter.com/7mlbo4dkQS— David Tanner (@DavidTannerTV) March 27, 2020
I’d take him back in any role he wanted

Id like him in an advisory role to gerrard i feel gerrards leniant treatment of morelos has caused friction in the dressing room and i feel players arent playing for him anymore souness is big enough to tell gerrard where he’s going wrong i dont see gary mac doing that

Aye I’d love him back in some sort of role .. why does he look possessed in this photo though ?

I’d like a proper businessman as chairman with Souness advising

@DavidTannerTV Would have on the board in a minute as would tell it how it is ????

I would welcome King Graeme home and no doubt the backers who would support him to get us back where we belong. King Graeme made it happen before and I trust him to do it again. WATP.

With money no object, until 2012, the former Sampdoria midfielder was able to attract England internationalists such as Terry Butcher, Chris Woods, Trevor Steven and Gary Stevens among others.
That policy eventually had to be paid for, the expenditure was exposed as mounting debt which eventually toppled the club.

Disregarding that and thinking that the same impact could be recreated 30 years later might just bring that yearned for trophy back to Ibrox.
Or reality might suggest that there are some very good reasons that Souness has been out of front line football for 14 years, sharing his expertise from the Sky Sports studio rather than the dug-out or boardroom.
