Football fans were amazed and sickened by news that Ian Maxwell has taken a 10% pay cut as the SFA deal with the suspension of football.

Across the country thousands of people on anything from the National Minimum Wage through to the average wage have been laid off and wait to see if they will qualify for £2,500 as part of the UK Government’s 80% pay scheme

On a salary of £300,000 pa, believed to be close to Maxwell’s deal a 10% cut will equate to REDUCING his top line by £2,500 meaning that he will be down to £22,500 per month before deductions for Income Tax and National Insurance.

Clarke is rumoured to be on a basic wage of around £500,000. His 10% cut will see his monthly basic go from £41,666 down to £37,500.

With most of the SFA staff furloughed Maxwell and Clarke will have much reduced workloads while taking 90% of their salaries.

SFA President Rod Petrie has taken a 20% pay cut and said:

I am grateful to our people for their efforts in adapting to these challenging and unprecedented times.

The impact of the virus on Scottish football is significant and from the Scottish FA’s perspective alone, this has already resulted in the postponement of a sell-out match against Israel in the UEFA Nations League Play-Off and the William Hill Scottish Cup semi-finals and final at Hampden Park.

As the governing body, we have a responsibility to protect the national game and it is also our duty as a board to safeguard the future of our staff during what medical experts predict will be an enduring period of uncertainty and national lockdown.

I stress this is a temporary measure in light of the severe impact on the association’s income generation and I would like to thank everyone for their understanding and ongoing commitment to the national game.

Tomorrow Maxwell will represent Scotland at a UEFA video conference to discuss the impact of the continued suspension.
