Celtic have yet to make any comment on Damien Duff’s new role as part of Stephen Kenny’s coaching team with the Football Association of Ireland.

Last February Duff was promoted from reserve team coach at Celtic to first team duties when Neil Lennon came in as caretaker and had that role confirmed in June when the former Hibs and Bolton boss got the job on a permanent basis.

When Brendan Rodgers left Celtic for Leicester last year both clubs made announcements at the same time after compensation had been agreed.

Duff’s role is likely to be part-time, during international breaks only, with the announcement made this afternoon from the FAI:

Keith Andrews joins new manager Stephen Kenny in making the move from the Under-21 set-up while Duff has earned his coaching stripes with Shamrock Rovers and Glasgow Celtic and will take up his appointment on August 1st.

In normal circumstances August 1 would see Celtic involved in European qualifying matches, the date may simply be contractual with international football put into hibernation for now by UEFA.

Nations League qualifiers are scheduled for September with Ireland due to play in Bulgaria on September 3. Ireland are involved in the Play-Offs for Euro 2020 with an away match against Slovakia that has still to be given a date.
