Charlie Austin has reflected on the stage in 2013 when he thought he was about to become a Celtic player.

Neil Lennon was first linked with the striker when he was at Swindon but in 2013 a new face was needed with Gary Hooper about to end his three year stay at the club.

The Celtic boss had watched Austin flourish at Burnley but since picking up Hooper for a bargain £2m the cost of Championship players had rocketed.

Jordan Rhodes was also linked with Celtic but rather than return to England Celtic went continental to sign Teemu Pukki and Amido Balde.

Asked on Open Goal about any opportunities he has had to move to Scotland he recalled:

Celtic when I was at Burnley. I think it was at the time when Gary Hooper was linked to leave six months before he went to Norwich.

I remember coming into training and Neil Lennon did an interview on Sky Sports saying ‘he’s someone that we’re looking at’.

I was on the phone to my agent saying, ‘look is this going to happen?’ It’s something that I would have done. At the time, it was just me, my missus and my one child and I said, ‘let’s go’ but nothing ever materialised after that and nothing has since.

Austin left Burnley for QPR where he scored regularly before moving on to Southampton before joining West Brom last summer for £4m.

Despite almost a decade in the spotlight he is still only 30 years old with 140 league goals to his name, the majority in The Championship.
