Callum McGregor got a surprise when Gavin Strachan took to the training ground at Lennoxtown.

The midfielder made his Scotland debut under Gordon Strachan but wasn’t met by a mini-me when the new addition to Neil Lennon’s backroom staff was introduced.

Gordon is one of the most passionate men in Scottish football whether he is in the dug-out, training ground or television studio nothing is delivered half-hearted.

Gavin is an unknown quantity in Scottish football but after a couple of days on the training pitch he has already made his mark on the Celtic squad.

McGregor told the Daily Record:

I didn’t know him, maybe you are expecting a carbon copy of Gordon but he’s a different person, his own man. He’s also a coach, who are more hands on in the sessions while the managers kind of take a step back and get involved when they want to.

It’s different roles that require different characteristics. It’s been a really positive start.

The first few days have been excellent and he seems like a good match. We’re all buzzing to be working together. The boys reckon he’s top class

Strachan Jnr will get a taste for Scottish weather today at Lennoxtown as Celtic continue their build up to the new season.

Contact training should be allowed next week with Lennon looking to arrange a couple of pre-season friendlies to take his squad upto the next level of fitness.

Reports from France have suggested that Celtic will take part in a four team tournament hosted by Lyon but that has still to be confirmed.
