The reconstruction plan to introduce a Celtic B/Colts team into the SPFL seems certain to fail today.
On Friday night BBC Scotland broke the news of the 14-14-18 plan that will be put to a vote today.
The enlarged top flight would see Hearts and Inverness Caley Thistle join the top flight while Brora Rangers, Kelty Hearts and B teams from the two leading Glasgow clubs parachuted into League One.
Celtic have been trying to find a way into the SPFL for decades but this is the first time that a plan has been put before all 42 SPFL clubs.
The speed with which the proposal has been made has alarmed a number of clubs, seven weeks ahead of the Premiership starting it is asking a lot for clubs to accept two more clubs enjoying the commercial benefits of life in the top tier.
To proceed the proposal needs 75% support from The Championship clubs, 75% of League One and League Two clubs plus 11 of the 12 Premiership sides.
The Sun reports:
Ibrox chiefs believe the idea would give their best young players invaluable experience of professional football. But there’s a concern among some other top-flight clubs that their academies would be at a disadvantage.
Gers’ bid is backed by Celtic and would be worth £1.2million to lower league outfits over four years. It would also clear the way for Kelty Hearts and Brora Rangers to enter the league.
The SPFL will hold a board meeting on Wednesday to discuss Gers’ paper and also the earlier reconstruction attempt made by Hearts. But a lack of support on both could see league chiefs move to draw a line under the season — virtually condemning Hearts to the Championship.
Celtic haven’t made any direct comment on the issue but were reported to be backing it in the initial BBC Scotland report.
